Resignation of Somali Refugee from Maine City Council

A Somali refugee who was recently sworn into the Maine City Council has stepped down less than three days later, amid allegations related to gun theft and other issues.

Iman Osman, 36, was elected to represent Lewiston City Council’s Ward 5 during the November elections. Before this, he had been on the Lewiston School Committee after being appointed to fill a vacancy.

“The level of aggression, vitriol, racism, and intimidation reached a point where he felt it was in the best interest of his family, community, and city for him to step aside,” Osman’s lawyer stated.

Osman was sworn in on Monday, but soon after, council members voted to start an investigation into him. In early December, he faced charges related to the theft of firearms linked to two different apartment complexes. He has denied the charges, pleading not guilty on Wednesday.

The scrutiny around Osman increased when he was accused of misrepresenting his residency by listing a condemned building owned by his brother as his home. There’s been speculation he might have used this false information to secure his previous position and his current council seat. Critics have raised concerns about his eligibility to represent the district if he doesn’t live there.

Given the ongoing controversy and the investigation over his residency, Osman announced his resignation to both the mayor and council president on Thursday morning.

In his resignation letter, Osman expressed that this decision was tough yet necessary, driven by his commitment to his community. He reflected on his election, noting he hoped to be a new voice in government, despite facing significant opposition. His tenure as the first black man elected to the council was marred by personal attacks aimed not just at him, but at the marginalized voices he aimed to support.

Interestingly, Osman’s resignation letter did not address any of the allegations against him.

His attorney mentioned that Osman was sure he would come through the residency test introduced by the council but felt it was best for his family to resign due to the hostility he faced.

In this atmosphere of tension, there was also a claim made at a recent meeting regarding threats against a reporter covering council matters. During public comments, the reporter alleged intimidation related to his reporting on Osman.

As for the investigation into Osman’s residency, City Council President David Chittim noted their unanimous decision to cease the inquiry after his resignation, clarifying that it effectively relieved Osman from his duties on the council.

The mayor and city communications director did not respond to requests for comments regarding the situation.
