Federal Authorities Arrest Southern California Man Over Alleged ISIS Support

On Friday, federal agents took a man from Southern California into custody after he reportedly made numerous payments to individuals in Iraq and Syria connected to the terrorist organization, ISIS.

Mark Lorenzo Villanueva, 28, from Long Beach, faces allegations of attempting to provide material support to foreign terrorist groups. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California confirmed his release following the arrest.

The information provided indicates that Villanueva is a legal permanent resident originally from the Philippines.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essay emphasized, “Supporting terrorist groups, whether at home or abroad, poses a serious threat to our national security. We are committed to identifying and prosecuting those who assist our adversaries.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office added:

According to the complaint affidavit, Villanueva engaged with two individuals on social media who claimed to be ISIS fighters. Within these exchanges, Villanueva expressed his eagerness to support ISIS and even offered financial assistance for their activities.

In conversations, he notably stated his aspiration to join ISIS in battle, calling it “an honor to fight for our faith and die.” He also added that he would be involved in such actions “someday soon.”

Furthermore, Villanueva allegedly mentioned possessing a bomb and a knife. During his arrest, the FBI reportedly found what appeared to be a bomb in his bedroom, as stated by prosecutors.

Over a span of five months, Villanueva allegedly sent $1,615 in total through two intermediaries who funneled the money overseas.

“It’s clear that Villanueva has pledged financial support and loyalty to terrorist organizations targeting U.S. interests both domestically and globally,” noted Patrick Grandy, head of the FBI’s Los Angeles office. He further stated, “Thanks to the diligent work of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the FBI and our partners have ensured Mr. Villanueva’s arrest today, halting further assistance for ISIS ideology.”
