Virginia Governor Praises Anti-ICE School Strike

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger recently lauded the student-led anti-ICE school strike during the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address.

“Does the president work for you?” Spanberger posed to viewers, affirming, “We all know the answer is no. But what’s truly remarkable about America is this: As we celebrate our 250th anniversary, we have a unique understanding of what’s achievable when everyday people, like those who once dreamt in this room, refuse to accept the unacceptable and demand more from our leaders.”

She expressed admiration for the students striking across the nation, noting, “Their determination has become so potent that even the governor of Texas is attempting to stifle their voices.” She highlighted the courage of Minnesotans standing up for their communities, whether through peaceful protests in frigid temperatures or organizing carpools to help immigrant families.

Spanberger found inspiration in their bravery, particularly as she navigated her own victories in Virginia. “As a mother of three daughters, I feel motivated by their courage, yet I’m disturbed that such actions are needed,” she remarked. “Americans are responding by heading to the ballot box, ready to reject this chaos. With their votes, they’re crafting a new, more optimistic narrative. I won my election by a substantial margin last November.”

In March, over 300 students faced suspensions after participating in an anti-ICE protest that expanded beyond their campus, drawing a police response.

Heather Abney, principal at Woodbridge High School in northern Virginia, stated that students wanted to “express their opinions on important issues.” In her communication with parents, she clarified that although the walkout was a form of expression, students didn’t stay on school property but left altogether.

Students Organizing Beyond School Walls

In Kyle, Texas, approximately 500 students from multiple schools participated in a walkout on a recent Monday, marching downtown as part of their anti-ICE demonstration.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott shared law enforcement footage that showed one student’s arrest during the protests. “These students deserved the consequences for their actions,” Abbott remarked, asserting that disruptive strikes can lead to chaos and danger.

Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, a video surfaced showing students leaving school and causing a commotion in a local grocery store during an anti-ICE protest. Shot by a bystander, the video captured students running through the aisles and disturbing merchandise, which included drinks being removed from shelves.

Ultimately, the situation reflects a growing trend of student activism across the country, though it raises questions about how far collective action should go and the potential repercussions for those involved.
