During a recent incident, Stephanie Shaheen, a congressional candidate, had a staffer who bluntly shoved a pastry into the camera of an America Rising tracker. This happened when the tracker asked if she supported Graham Platner’s campaign for the U.S. Senate. Interestingly, Shaheen didn’t provide any answer.
Graham Platner, the Democratic contender for the open Senate seat in Maine, has been embroiled in various controversies over the last year. Just last month, it came to light that he engaged in sexually explicit conversations with several women while married. This backlash follows previous issues, including some provocative Reddit posts and a tattoo that resembles the Nazi symbol Totenkopf, which Platner claimed he didn’t grasp the significance of at the time.
Shaheen is aiming for her mother’s former position in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, a seat left vacant by Chris Pappas who is now running for the Senate. Neither she nor her mother, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, have publicly voiced support for Platner, yet Republicans are seizing on Shaheen’s silence regarding him.
Maureen O’Toole from the National Republican Congressional Committee commented that Shaheen missed an opportunity to condemn Platner’s actions. Instead, she stated, “She chose to remain silent on the radio while her staff attacked her questioners with donuts.” O’Toole emphasized that the residents of New Hampshire deserve representation that doesn’t ignore straightforward questions or use food as a distraction.
Despite the unfolding controversies surrounding Platner, several significant Democratic figures continue to back him. Leaders such as Chuck Schumer and Bernie Sanders maintain their support, with Sanders insisting that the focus should not be on Platner’s personal life but on tackling the challenges faced by working families.
In an endorsement, Sanders backed Platner shortly after he launched his campaign. Throughout his run, Platner has echoed calls to challenge wealthy individuals, although he hasn’t branded himself as a democratic socialist. Schumer’s endorsement also came shortly after Maine’s Governor Janet Mills withdrew from the race.
Democratic leaders emphasize the significance of regaining control of the Senate, with multiple figures highlighting just how critical it is for their party moving forward. Booker pointed out the high stakes of this election, and Schumer has consistently framed their efforts around defeating Republican Susan Collins and reclaiming the Senate.
