State auditor seeks to make a meaningful impact by introducing state-level DOGE

North Carolina Auditor Aims for Efficiency with New Initiative

North Carolina’s state auditor expressed optimism about positively impacting taxpayers through a new initiative known as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

In an exclusive conversation, auditor Dave Boliek mentioned that he is focused on improving his office’s efficiency and using resources in a way that truly benefits taxpayers. This is part of House Bill 125, a new measure named after him, which has recently passed in the legislature.

“This initiative gives us the opportunity to allocate more resources towards assessing efficiency and figuring out the return on investment for taxpayer dollars in North Carolina,” Boliek explained.

He also emphasized the strength of his team and their ability to achieve meaningful results. “I truly believe in what we’re doing,” he added.

New Bill to Enhance Accountability

The recently passed bill allows for the creation of a division dedicated to accountability, value, and efficiency within state auditing. It garnered bipartisan support in Congress, passing with a vote of 91-23 in the House and 47-2 in the Senate.

Now, the bill awaits action from Governor Josh Stein, with uncertainty surrounding whether he will sign it. However, with a Republican majority and sufficient support from Democrats, the bill is likely to become law, according to Boliek.

Boliek clarified that his approach will be data-driven, enabling a comprehensive analysis of taxpayer dollars. He also indicated that his office will examine state government operations rather than just focusing on specific areas that may require cuts.

“It’s premature to target specific areas for cuts without thorough investigation,” he remarked, noting that modern technology like AI and data analytics will be pivotal in forming robust recommendations.

Addressing Resource Allocation

Unlike previous efforts, this initiative also aims to allocate funds to areas lacking resources, recognizing the need to serve citizens better. Boliek pointed out that they will analyze why certain state positions remain unfilled and what can be done about that.

“We need to explore not only reductions but also gaps in service where resources are lacking,” he added, highlighting a comprehensive view of state spending.

In discussions about the direction of this initiative, Boliek mentioned the importance of backing recommendations with solid data rather than simply intuition. “If we’re considering spending taxpayer money on certain programs, we need to understand the actual returns,” he said.

Looking Ahead

Boliek made a point of stressing the importance of tracking how tax dollars are allocated, particularly in light of recovery efforts following natural disasters like Hurricane Helen. “It’s crucial not just to spend money, but to ensure it’s spent wisely,” he emphasized.

As his office prepares for the potential signing of the Dave Act, Boliek described this moment as an “exciting time” where meaningful impacts can be made for everyday North Carolinians.

“We want to ensure that citizens feel someone is looking out for them and holding the government accountable,” Boliek concluded.
