State Department issues caution about violent crime dangers in the Dominican Republic

Authorities are advising Americans to exercise caution when traveling, particularly to the Dominican Republic, which has become a popular summer destination. This comes amid concerns over rising violent crime rates and insufficient law enforcement resources.

The U.S. Department of State highlighted that violent crime remains a significant issue in the Dominican Republic, despite an increased police presence in tourist areas. They recommend being discreet with valuables and being wary of online acquaintances, especially in isolated locations.

A recent advisory update placed the Dominican Republic at a Level 2 travel advisory on June 12, signaling that travelers should “exercise increased caution.” The advisory system rates destinations from Level 1 to Level 4, based on local risks, including crime and natural disasters. Level 2 suggests travelers should maintain a heightened awareness, while Level 3 prompts reconsideration of travel plans, and Level 4 advises against travel altogether.

The advisory emphasizes that cases of robbery, murder, and sexual assault are common, and attackers are seldom apprehended or prosecuted. Additionally, a security report pointed to the prevalence of organized crime, such as drug trafficking and money laundering, affecting safety.

The State Department encourages travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Registration Program for assistance and support during emergencies.

Moreover, in a report from December 2024, the Overseas Security Advisory Committee noted factors enhancing crime rates, like the accessibility of weapons, widespread drug use, and an inadequate justice system, exacerbated by issues like poorly trained law enforcement and corruption.
