Representative Elise Stefanik (R-New York) has filed a complaint against New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) over former President Trump’s civil fraud case.
House Republican Conference Chair Stefanik acknowledged on X, formerly known as Twitter, that James had filed a complaint accusing him of conducting a biased investigation into the former president.
“Today, I filed a complaint against New York State Attorney General Letitia James for violating the Code of Professional Conduct by conducting a biased investigation and prosecution of President Trump.” Her post read:
Stefanik argued that the investigation and trial against Trump is of “great public interest and concern.” She argued that Mr. James has a First Amendment right to speak freely, but that he is subject to special rules based on the state’s professional conduct for licensed attorneys.Complaints NBC News first reported.
“Going after President Trump has been her stated mission ever since she announced her candidacy. Such conduct not only undermines the integrity of the legal process, but also violates James’ duties as a qualified attorney. “It also violates the United Nations Code of Professional Conduct,” she said in an emailed statement.
Mr. James sued Mr. Trump in 2022, alleging that the former president misrepresented his net worth on financial statements to obtain tax and insurance benefits on various assets of the Trump Organization. She claimed this was evidence of fraud, but President Trump insisted there was no fraud.
The trial concluded in January after two months of testimony from 40 witnesses, including Trump’s former lawyers, organization executives, Trump’s adult children and the former president.
Judge Arthur Engoron, who has already ruled that Trump committed fraud in his real estate empire, said he expected to rule on the $370 million civil fraud case in “early to mid-February.” I’m planning on dropping it.
The New York state lawmaker claimed that James made “highly inappropriate and biased comments on social media.”
“In the first five weeks alone of the trial, which began in October 2023, I’ve stopped counting,” she said, “James has made over 50 highly inappropriate and biased statements on social media. I made a comment.” of
said the letter.
She asked the Attorney Grievance Commission to investigate James and issue a finding that could mean disbarment or suspension. She requested James’ “interim suspension” and recommended further “disqualification or suspension.”
Stefanik is a strong ally of President Trump and is rumored to be one of the few potential running mates in the 2024 presidential election. She filed multiple ethics complaints about her in the case, criticizing the arguments brought against her former president.
Stefanik said in an emailed statement that she found James’ handling of the investigation to be “nothing short of shameful.”
“Her actions not only constitute a breach of professional responsibility, but also risk irreparable harm to the already eroded public confidence in our legal institutions,” Stefanik said in a statement. There is,” he said.
James’ office did not comment on Stefanik’s allegations when contacted by The Hill.
