Michelle Beadle Critiques Stephen A. Smith Over Gaming Controversy

Michelle Beadle has voiced her disapproval of a recent move by Stephen A. Smith, particularly regarding his new role as an ambassador for mobile gaming company Papaya. This appointment is linked to the upcoming World Solitaire Championship (WSC).

During her podcast, “Beadle & Decker,” she expressed her strong feelings about Smith without naming him directly. “It’s no secret how I feel about that person,” she remarked. This discussion opened up when co-host Cody Decker noted that Papaya is currently involved in a federal lawsuit for allegedly misrepresenting a “game of skill” that uses bots. Beadle didn’t hold back her criticism, stating, “To be honest, I’m not a religious person, but I pray for destruction, I really do.”

Her frustration seems rooted in Smith’s recent viral moment, where he was seen playing solitaire on his phone while covering a critical NBA Finals game. It raises questions about professionalism, especially given the context of his substantial earnings at ESPN, which amount to $21 million under his latest contract.

Beadle went on to address the ethical implications of this situation, saying, “That’s terrible. There has to be a principle behind this.” Papaya announced Smith as its official ambassador shortly after his blunder was publicized, and the first World Solitaire Championship is slated for February.

In her candid remarks, Beadle highlighted the absurdity of it all: “ESPN is paying him billions of dollars to make a bunch of mistakes and yell.” Her comments reflect her dissatisfaction with how Smith has conducted himself, especially in light of being caught playing solitaire during such a significant event.

Moreover, she seemed to feel that Smith’s actions trivialize serious broadcasting, creating a spectacle rather than a respectful sports analysis. “He was handed a blank check, and now he’s trying to turn it into a money-making opportunity while it looks like a fraudulent crappy business to begin with,” she mentioned. Beadle is not shy about sharing her thoughts, even referring to Smith’s behavior as a creation of a ‘monster’ by ESPN itself.

On a personal note, Beadle’s feelings about Smith have been apparent for quite some time. Since stepping away from ESPN, her critiques of him have often resurfaced. After Smith announced he would take over her time slot on a SiriusXM show, she expressed her lack of respect for him in a public forum.

In light of the ongoing lawsuit against Papaya, which alleges misuse of bots that mimic human players, concerns grow regarding the integrity of the games involved. Documents reveal that from 2019 to at least November 2023, these bots were actively used, potentially skewing the fairness of competitions. A judge noted, “Papaya could prevent players from winning or even allow them to win, regardless of their performance in the game.”

This situation has reminded many of the importance of accountability in the gaming world, and it seems that voices like Beadle’s will continue to challenge the status quo.
