Stephen Colbert Defends Anti-Israel Campus Protesters After Trump Praises NYPD Response

CBS late-night comedian Stephen Colbert defended anti-Israel protesters who have taken over college campuses across the country after former President Donald Trump praised the New York Police Department’s response to protesters at Columbia University.

On Tuesday’s show, Stephen Colbert said the public should support protesters “as long as they are peaceful.” But Colbert did not mention that protesters could sometimes act violently. At Columbia University, students broke through windows and doors to take over Hamilton Hall.

In some schools, demonstrators prevented other students from attending classes. At George Washington University, demonstrators could be seen holding signs that read “The Final Solution,” a reference to the Nazi extermination of Jews.

Colbert sidestepped these incidents during Tuesday’s segment.

“People should be allowed to protest, even if they don’t agree with the people they’re protesting, as long as it’s peaceful,” Colbert said. “It’s just the First Amendment.”

Colbert also criticized university leaders for forcibly removing camps set up by left-wing students in violation of campus policies.

“University administrators are using classic de-escalation tactics, sending in heavily armed police and threatening to call in the National Guard,” the comedian said.

Colbert’s defense of anti-Israel protests came on the same day that former President Donald Trump praised the NYPD’s actions in clearing the Colombian encampment.

President Trump “praised the way they did it” in an interview on Fox News. [NYPD] I went in,” and “I wasn’t afraid of anything.”

Meanwhile, anti-Israel violence continues to disrupt campuses across the country.

Anti-Israel demonstrations begin at City University of New York push Police were on the front line, allegedly storming buildings near an anti-Israel camp on campus.
