Maine Democratic Party Calls for Plattner’s Withdrawal from Senate Race Amid Allegations
Graham Plattner, a Democratic candidate for the Senate in Maine, is facing serious allegations of sexual assault from his former girlfriend, Jenny Racicot. Plattner has denied these claims, asserting that “any accusation of non-consensual conduct is completely false.” In the wake of these accusations, Congressman Ro Khanna has withdrawn his support and urged Plattner to resign by July 13.
On the same day, well-known Maine writer Stephen King expressed his support for Plattner, despite the unfolding controversy. He commented on social media, hoping Plattner does not choose to bow out of the race.
These allegations emerged amidst a critical timeline for Plattner’s campaign. Racicot has alleged that Plattner broke into her home while intoxicated in 2021 and assaulted her, a claim which he continues to refute.
Stephen King, famous for works like “The Shining,” shared his disappointment and hinted at inconsistencies in the political landscape. “Graham Plattner may quit (though I hope he doesn’t), while the abuser in chief continues on,” he wrote, alluding to various allegations against other politicians, including the current president.
In a follow-up message, King emphasized the flaws present among many lawmakers, saying, “If you knew the whole truth about everyone in the Senate and the House of Representatives, those chambers would be completely empty.” His comments sparked mixed reactions, particularly from conservative critics who took issue with his stance.
As for Plattner, while many speculate that his exit from the race is near, he has not made any firm commitments. In a recent video address, he stated that he is reflecting on “the best path forward” while emphasizing his original goals of serving the state and defeating incumbent Republican senator Susan Collins.
