Stock futures show mixed results as traders anticipate the Fed's decision and Big Tech earnings: Live updates

Mixed Early Trading for U.S. Equity Futures

On Wednesday morning, U.S. equity futures showed a mixed trend as investors looked ahead to earnings reports from major technology firms and a decision on monetary policy from the Federal Reserve, which is expected later in the day.

S&P 500 futures edged up, while Nasdaq-100 futures saw a 0.5% increase. In contrast, Dow futures declined by 0.2%.

Across Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 1.38%, and the Topix index increased by 0.23%. South Korea’s Kospi remarkably surged by 6.57%, with the tech-heavy Kosdaq rising 3.09%. Meanwhile, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was slightly higher, the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong rose by 0.43%, and mainland China’s CSI 300 saw a gain of 0.68%.

In the previous day’s trading in the U.S., the major indices finished on a positive note. Chip stocks continued their upward trend, buoyed by an announcement from Broadcom regarding a $63 billion financing arrangement from several banks. This funding is aimed at acquiring chips and networking solutions intended for lease to Anthropic, the organization responsible for Claude. Following this news, Broadcom’s shares rose by 4%. Advanced Micro Devices surged by 5.5%, and Micron Technology increased by 2.8%.

These movements contributed to a 1.2% increase in the Nasdaq Composite for that session.

Additionally, the fall in oil prices offered further support to stocks after reports emerged of Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei meeting with a top security official. Their conversation centered on potential terms for concluding the ongoing conflict with the U.S.

Attention will shift to domestic monetary policy on Wednesday, as the Fed concludes its two-day meeting. Analysts anticipate that the central bank will keep interest rates unchanged within the 3.75% to 4% target range after raising rates by a quarter percentage point last month.

According to the CME’s FedWatch tool, there’s about a 92% probability that the Fed will maintain the current rate. However, some observers speculate that Chairman Kevin Warsh may hint at future rate hikes. The announcement regarding interest rates is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.

Later, after the market closes, investors will pivot back to the tech sector as major companies like Alphabet and Microsoft prepare to report their earnings. There’s some apprehension surrounding tech stocks, particularly regarding their funding related to artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, Mike Wilson, Morgan Stanley’s chief U.S. equity strategist, suggests that a recent rally in tech stocks indicates that the correction phase might be coming to an end.

“Most of the correction is already over,” he remarked during an appearance on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” on Tuesday. “We’ve been in correction mode for four or five months… the market has digested this very efficiently, I think.”
