A police officer and his father, who were tragically killed in a shooting nearly a year ago while on duty at a Park Avenue building in New York City, were honored Saturday during a ceremony to rename a street in the Bronx.
The street, now called Didalul Islam Way, was officially unveiled at the intersection of East 172nd Street and Beach Avenue in Soundview. Family, friends of the fallen officers, and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, along with other NYPD officials, were in attendance.
“By naming this street after Didal, we’re embedding his memory into the very fabric of the Bronx, a place he loved and dedicated himself to protect,” Tisch expressed in a post on X after the ceremony.
“When someone’s name becomes part of our community, their life contributes to the narrative of New York,” her message continued. “Didalul Islam has rightfully earned this place in our story.”
On July 28, 2025, Didalul Islam, 36, was in uniform, serving as a security guard at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan when a gunman entered the lobby wielding an assault rifle—it was during this chaos that he sustained his fatal injury.
The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamra, fatally shot four individuals with an AR-15 style rifle before taking his own life.
Investigators found Tamra’s actions were driven by a belief he was targeting the NFL due to suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain injury linked with football. A later autopsy confirmed his condition.
Didalul Islam was posthumously promoted to detective first class.
His wife, who was pregnant at the time of his death and later welcomed a son, was present at the event with their three young children.
“May Didalul Islam Way serve as a lasting reminder of his commitment to both New York and his family, which was everything to him,” Tisch said in her post on X. “May his memory continue to be a source of blessings.”
In an additional note, a National Football League employee who was injured in the shooting is planning to sue the city for $24 million, claiming that negligence related to the Islamic incident allowed the gunman to enter the building and carry out the attack.
