University Students Turn to OnlyFans for Quick Cash

A growing trend among university students across the country is raising eyebrows as many look for unconventional means to earn money while in school. One such student, Shayna Loren, a 21-year-old senior advertising major at Boston University, began her journey at 18 when she proposed a unique business idea to her parents: creating content for OnlyFans.

OnlyFans, a platform where adults can share and monetize explicit material, is becoming increasingly popular among students eager to supplement their incomes, especially in light of rising tuition fees. Shayna mentioned her interest in leveraging the marketing skills she had honed to explore this new venture. “I talked to my parents and laid out my business plan,” she recalled.

Her parents, considering it a “research project,” supported her decision. Soon after she started, Shayna found herself gaining attention rapidly. “I exploded,” she admitted, with her popularity only increasing from that point on.

Three years into her journey, Shayna aims to capitalize on her college status, catering to a niche audience looking for university-themed adult content. She reflected, “Most people in school can relate to the struggles of being a student, and I wanted to showcase that fantasy online.” Today, she has amassed a significant following, with over 700,000 on Instagram alone, using her earnings to fund her education and assist in her parents’ retirement.

Despite these success stories, experts raise alarm bells regarding the safety risks involved in sharing explicit content online. Psychoanalyst Dr. Carol Lieberman emphasized that many students, by being open about their personal lives, could inadvertently expose themselves to stalkers or individuals with predatory intentions. “They end up at risk because some might believe there’s a personal connection when there isn’t one,” she explained.

Data from the Education Data Initiative indicates that the average annual cost for a US university education has reached approximately $38,270, more than double the rates from earlier decades. Consequently, pressure on students to find quick financial solutions intensifies, making platforms like OnlyFans tempting for many.

However, this fast-money approach can lead to questionable boundaries, merging online personas with real-life stakes. A documentary producer, Rock Jacobs, illustrated the darker sides of content creation when he noted instances of extreme oversteps by fans. “There was a case where a man drove five hours to break into a woman’s home,” he recounted, highlighting the potential dangers lurking in the digital landscape.

Shayna herself stays vigilant and avoids walking alone at night on campus—a necessary precaution for someone operating in this space. She acknowledged that many aspiring creators might lack the awareness of these risks. “For those who are just starting out, the blurred lines between work and personal life can lead to vulnerability.”

Ultimately, Shayna highlights the importance of understanding this line—strong creators tend to manage their work-life compartmentalization better. “It’s important to recognize that this is a job, and keeping boundaries is crucial,” she advised, especially for those who might be considering similar avenues to support their education.
