New York State to Issue Inflation Refund Checks this October
Rochester, New York – The New York State Department of Treasury is gearing up to distribute the state’s first inflation refund checks in mid-October.
These one-time payments aim to assist New Yorkers who have been impacted by sales tax hikes due to inflation. The amount of the check will vary, ranging from $150 to $400, depending on your income and tax filing status. To qualify, individuals must file a 2023 tax return and cannot be claimed on someone else’s return.
“We understand that many folks are working hard toward savings goals or simply trying to create an emergency fund. A lot of residents, both in Rochester and nationwide, don’t have a $400 safety net,” a local official shared.
For those earning less than $67,000 with dependents, or less than $37,000 without dependents, free tax preparation services are available through the Empire Justice Centre’s Cash Program.
“We encourage individuals to visit on Tuesday and Wednesday if they have any questions at the Central Library,” mentioned Yversha Roman, who directs strategic partnerships for the cash program. “We’re here to assist with submitting 2023 taxes and obtaining that inflation refund check.”
There are income limits. For instance, individuals filing as single who earn over $150,000 won’t be eligible for a refund check.
According to the New York State Department of Taxation, more than 8 million residents are expected to receive checks starting mid-October and continuing for several weeks.
“We aim to provide useful recommendations to help individuals navigate taxes,” Roman added. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone submits their information correctly, offering one-on-one guidance and education.”
To be eligible for an inflation refund check, taxes must be filed by October 15th.
