Some everyday foods might be negatively affecting your gut health more than you think. As discussions around gut health gain traction, experts emphasize the significant role diet plays in our microbiome. An imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to various gastrointestinal problems, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bloating, constipation, and diarrhea, according to Robin DeCicco, a holistic nutritionist from New York City.
Here are four foods that experts believe could be harming your gut health.
Supermarket Bread
Packaged bread found in most grocery stores could be more harmful than people realize. DeCicco highlights that many of these breads are highly processed and include ingredients that disrupt the balance of gut bacteria. Often made with refined flour and preservatives for longer shelf life, these breads typically sacrifice fiber content.
Fried Food
Foods that are fried or excessively oily can be tough on the digestive system. “The body struggles to digest such fatty meals,” DeCicco explains, noting that many fried foods are cooked in refined vegetable oils, which can further upset intestinal balance if consumed frequently.
Sugar
Foods and beverages high in sugar are significant contributors to poor gut health. Ice cream, in particular, presents a challenge for digestion, combining hard-to-digest ingredients with high sugar levels. DeCicco stresses that sugary foods are never beneficial and contribute to inflammation, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. She warns that frequent blood sugar spikes can disrupt the gut microbiome, fueling harmful bacteria growth.
Vegan Cheese
While plant-based cheese alternatives are becoming increasingly popular, some highly processed options may not be good for your gut. DeCicco points out that these products often contain additives and fillers that can irritate the intestines. She suggests sticking to whole foods and choosing alternatives made from genuine ingredients when needed.
