Support for Trump's immigration policies declines among independent voters in a recent poll

Trump’s Immigration Policies Face Mixed Reactions in New Poll

Despite some wavering support among independents, Republicans continue to back President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, particularly his stringent crackdown. A recent poll indicates a significant division in public opinion, with many Americans, about 60%, believing that Trump has overstepped by deploying federal immigration agents in cities across the country. This sentiment is especially strong among Democrats and independents, with around 90% of Democrats and 70% of independents agreeing that he’s gone too far.

Interestingly, the poll shows that approximately half of Republican respondents think Trump’s approach is “about right,” while a quarter feel he hasn’t taken enough action. The survey came out just before Trump’s immigration chief, Tom Homan, announced that federal enforcement in Minnesota is coming to an end, which had previously centered in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, leading to over 4,000 arrests.

Even with the ongoing controversies surrounding federal enforcement, Trump’s overall approval rating on immigration remains steady at 38%, unchanged since January. However, support among independents has dropped from 37% in March 2025 to 23% currently, with about 60% of independents now believing that the president is mismanaging deportations.

Partisan divisions are striking, particularly regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Only about 30% of Americans view ICE favorably; however, this figure significantly diverges along party lines. Approximately 70% of Republicans hold a favorable view of the agency, while merely 20% of independents and 10% of Democrats share that sentiment.

The data also hints that Republicans may be losing their long-standing edge on immigration issues. Back in October, they enjoyed a 13-point advantage over Democrats in trust regarding immigration policy. Now, that gap has tightened to just 4 points, with about 30% of Americans leaning towards either party and another 30% feeling neither will effectively tackle the matter.

In the scope of Trump’s presidency, his overall approval rating stands at about 36%, showing a slight decline since his second term began. His evaluations of economic management and foreign policy have similarly seen little change recently.
