Supreme Court rejects Alaska’s attempted revival of copper and gold mine

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected Alaska's bid to revive a copper-gold mining project that had been blocked by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The justices did not comment on rejecting the state's attempt to sue the Biden administration directly in high court to revive the proposed Pebble mine in the state's Bristol Bay region.

The EPA halted the mine project a year ago, citing concerns about its potential impact on the rich aquatic ecosystem that supports the world's largest sockeye salmon fishery.

States can sue each other and the federal government in the Supreme Court, but the justices preside over appeals and only hear original cases in a few cases each year.

Alaska can still try to overturn the decision through the more common process of starting with a lower court and appealing an unfavorable ruling to the Supreme Court.
