Surrogate Learns She’s Carrying Child for Controversial Billionaire
A surrogate in the U.S. recently found out that she’s expecting a child for a Chinese national who allegedly has over 300 children, as reported by CBS News. The surrogate, who is identified only as Judy, was among 32 women interviewed during an investigation into billionaire Xu Bo, a video game executive.
Initially, Judy thought she was carrying a child for a single father. It was only after CBS News connected her to Bo through leaked documents that she learned the truth. “I feel blindsided. I feel misled,” she expressed.
Xu’s ex-partner is currently in a custody dispute involving 11 children and has claimed that he may have even more than 300. While Xu has acknowledged having at least 100 children, he seems to view large families as beneficial, stating that they bring “more blessings” and contribute to the development of China. He has even posted a photo online appearing to show over 100 babies gathered in what looks like a lecture hall.
“It feels like he’s creating an army. That’s crazy,” Judy remarked. “I don’t understand what the motive is; I just know it’s going to be really hard for the child.”
The phenomenon of cross-border surrogacy enables foreign nationals to have children through American surrogates, automatically granting those children U.S. citizenship rights and benefits.
The Department of Justice has emphasized that such schemes often exploit existing laws. They warned that those trying to take advantage of loopholes for citizenship could represent a national security risk and will face legal repercussions.
A study highlighted that between 2014 and 2022, there were over 59,000 assisted reproductive cycles conducted in the U.S. for non-residents, with a significant number — nearly 20,000 — coming from China.
“It’s just a very crappy thing to be a part of,” Judy reflected. “I mean, you don’t even think, like, this can be legal.”
