A homecoming celebration in Minnesota turned chaotic when gunfire erupted, leading to significant concerns over crime and bail practices, especially after the alleged shooter was released from custody merely two days post-arrest.
Adam Abdihakeem Adam, just 18 years old, was released on Saturday evening after posting bond, according to records from Hennepin County jail.
The incident took place outside Eden Prairie High School during its homecoming football game on October 2, resulting in the evacuation of the stadium after two teenagers were shot.
This decision to release Adam sparked backlash, with President Donald Trump’s Rapid Response 47 account denouncing the situation and referencing police claims that the shooting involved rival Somali gangs.
According to the account, “A Radical Left judge immediately granted him a no-condition bail,” which resonated with many on social media.
Jail records indicated a bail set at $100,000, enabling Adam’s release at 7:04 p.m. on October 10. He faces two felony charges for second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, as well as one count of second-degree riot while armed with a dangerous weapon.
His next court date is set for Monday afternoon.
The shooting resulted in injuries to an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old, leading to an extensive investigation involving multiple agencies, as detailed by Eden Prairie police.
Authorities report that the violence broke out after two cars entered a parking lot, resulting in a conflict among roughly ten individuals. The driver of one vehicle exited and began firing at the victims before fleeing the scene, as referenced in charging documents reported by FOX 9 Minneapolis.
Adam was identified as the driver who allegedly abandoned his brother’s car. Investigators were able to trace his phone activity pre- and post-shooting before he discarded it and switched numbers.
In a search of his St. Louis Park residence, police discovered clothing that matched what was seen in surveillance footage from the incident, as noted by FOX 9.
Adam was apprehended on October 8 without any incident near Highway 55 and Penn Avenue in Minneapolis, with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office commending detectives and task force members for their role in the arrest.
Eden Prairie Police Chief Matt Sackett expressed pride in the officers and investigators who worked diligently with partners in law enforcement to identify and pursue those responsible.
This case has heightened fears regarding gang-related violence involving Somali groups in the metropolitan area, prompting regional public safety organizations to collaborate under the guidance of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Police leaders indicated they are sharing information and coordinating efforts to avert future shootings.
Michele Tafoya, a Republican U.S. Senate candidate, referred to the homecoming shooting and other recent violence, expressing that many in Minnesota increasingly feel unsafe.
She noted, “Our law enforcement here are calling it out as the product of Somali gang violence, and we’ve got to identify it, and we have to find a way to deal with it,” during a conversation with Fox News Digital.
Eden Prairie police are also looking into a shooting incident that occurred on October 5 at a Speedway gas station, though no injuries were reported there. So far, investigators have found no links between that incident and the homecoming shooting.
Chief Sackett mentioned that the investigation into the homecoming incident is ongoing, and more arrests or charges may be forthcoming.
