Texas Man Held Without Bail After Incident at OpenAI CEO’s Home
A Texas man, Daniel Moreno-Gama, 20, has been ordered to remain in custody without bail following an incident at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. His lawyer argued that he was undergoing a mental health crisis at the time of the alleged attack.
Moreno-Gama appeared in a San Francisco court and, though he refrained from entering a plea to several charges—such as attempted murder—his arraignment has been postponed, with a new court date set for May 5. The public defender, Diamond Ward, contested the prosecution’s claims, stating that Moreno-Gama has autism and was in a “severe mental health crisis” when the incident occurred. She described the situation as primarily a property crime and suggested that the charges were disproportionate, perhaps influenced by Altman’s notoriety.
Prosecutors, on the other hand, assert that the attack was a serious matter. They allege that Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to San Francisco with a premeditated intent to kill Altman. They claim he threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home early Friday morning, igniting the outside gate before fleeing. No injuries were reported, and it is unclear if Altman was present during the incident.
Shortly thereafter, Moreno-Gama allegedly appeared at OpenAI’s headquarters, threatening to burn down the building and harm everyone inside. Surveillance footage reportedly showed him throwing a chair at a glass door. He was subsequently arrested outside the building with a jug of kerosene, a lighter, and materials believed to contain hostile sentiments toward artificial intelligence.
Additionally, sources indicate that Moreno-Gama had in his possession a manifesto that listed the names and addresses of various AI executives and investors, suggesting a deeper motive behind his actions. FBI officials have stated that the attack appears to have been planned and targeted, emphasizing its severity.
San Francisco’s District Attorney, Brooke Jenkins, has charged Moreno-Gama with multiple counts of attempted murder related to the arson, which could potentially result in a sentence ranging from 19 years to life in prison. Federal charges are also pending, including possession of an unregistered firearm, which could extend his sentence further if convicted.
Authorities are still in the early phases of their investigation. If evidence reveals that Moreno-Gama executed these acts to influence public policy or intimidate officials, they may classify the actions as domestic terrorism. Meanwhile, FBI agents have conducted a search at Moreno-Gama’s Texas home in connection with the investigation, collecting evidence over several hours.
The suspect’s writings are said to contain threats directed at other leaders in the AI sector, raising broader concerns regarding the escalating rhetoric surrounding emerging technologies. Organizations advocating for safe practices in artificial intelligence have condemned such violence, stating that threats have no role in constructive dialogue.
In light of this incident, officials are advocating for peaceful discussions about the technology as tensions rise concerning the role of artificial intelligence in society.
