Suspect Attempts to Evade Arrest by Swimming Away
A man, who was wanted on a felony warrant, made a peculiar attempt to escape law enforcement by swimming for about 90 minutes in the Pacific Ocean near Will Rogers State Beach. This unusual situation ended when lifeguards surrounded him and helped bring him into custody.
As reported, the incident began around 7:21 a.m. when officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s West LA Division tried to make contact with the suspect near the Pacific Coast Highway. In an effort to evade capture, he fled on foot and then ran past a lifeguard station into the water.
Video footage showed the man putting up a struggle as three lifeguards worked to restrain him before guiding him to a waiting boat from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Throughout his time in the water, the suspect remained several hundred yards offshore. Lifeguards maintained a close watch on him while a rescue boat was also stationed nearby.
At one point, the suspect swam towards the shore near Temescal Canyon but suddenly reversed course, heading back into deeper water. After about a mile of swimming, during which he was reportedly bare from the waist up, lifeguards moved in to end the standoff.
Interestingly, there hasn’t been clarity on what initially led officers to approach the suspect or the specific nature of the felony warrant. His identity and condition remained undisclosed, and authorities have not provided further information at this time.
