Tragic Sword Attack at Swedish High School

A teenage girl has sadly died following a sword attack at a high school in Sweden. The alleged attacker, an 18-year-old named Liam Nebel, has now been placed in pretrial detention by the Västmanland District Court.

Nebel is being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after the incident at Brinell High School in Fagersta, Västmanland County, which occurred on Friday. Authorities have confirmed that a 17-year-old girl was killed in the attack, while three teenage boys sustained injuries, with two of them in serious condition.

According to police, the deceased girl was not specifically targeted but was instead a random victim in the attack, as noted by the German newspaper Die Welt.

The defense lawyer for Nebel mentioned that, although their client has not confessed to the police, he has not disputed the murder charge. However, he does contest the additional attempted murder charges. Nebel has a challenging background and was placed in foster care last year due to significant issues in his home environment. He was a student at Brinell High School, which allowed him access to the premises on the day of the incident, thanks to his student ID.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports that authorities are investigating a potential “far-right” motivation for the attack. It appears Nebel was dressed similarly to Anton Lundin Pettersson, a school shooter from 2015, who was known for his distinctive black coat and helmet.

Fortunately, the prompt response from police may have mitigated further casualties. Officers apprehended the suspect and fired shots within ten minutes of receiving the emergency call about the incident.

There are reports in Swedish media about a social media account linked to Nebel, though police have not confirmed this. A TikTok post was allegedly made just before the attack, showing a large sword atop a guitar case in the school bathrooms, with the caption “no more edits.” Previously, the same school had been evacuated in May due to a threat, though it remains unclear if these two incidents are connected.

On Saturday, the Swedish Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition visited the scene to pay their respects. The local church was opened to the public on Sunday for mourning, and the government set up a crisis support center to assist those affected.
