Tallarico and O’Rourke Unite for Voter Engagement
Texas Senate candidate James Tallarico is collaborating with former Senate hopeful Beto O’Rourke on a voter outreach initiative. This campaign is directed at drag show attendees, Mexican soccer fans, and individuals who have previously been excluded from voter lists, according to reports.
Having faced several unsuccessful campaigns, O’Rourke now mentors emerging Democrats through his organization, “Powered by People.” He recently held a strategic Zoom meeting with Tallarico’s team to discuss their approach for the upcoming election.
Amy Prudhomme, Executive Director of Powered by People, shared insights during the call about the Democratic Party’s outreach strategy as they gear up for the November election. “As Beto has said, we go where the people are,” she explained. “Our aim is to connect with likely Democratic voters, especially those affected by voter suppression who may face removal from the rolls this November.”
In Texas, state election laws stipulate that voters may be removed from the rolls for various reasons, such as felony incarceration, being undocumented, or other circumstances like mental incapacity, moving, or death.
Prudhomme also listed specific events and locations that their campaign will target, including drag shows and World Cup viewing parties. “We’ve been active at several events, even if the U.S. and Mexico didn’t qualify for the tournament,” she noted. “We’re there to engage with those attendees.”
O’Rourke echoed the need for awareness, citing that the election is being undermined against Tallarico by Republican figures, including President Donald Trump. This is notable considering Democrats have often labeled the president as an election denier.
O’Rourke emphasized the importance of collective action, saying that they must “take back our country from those attempting to undermine it.” He voiced concerns about intimidation tactics being used against voters, noting recent congressional redistricting efforts in Texas as another alarming trend.
Tallarico is set to compete against Republican candidate and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the general election on November 3.
