Tax season is officially open. The IRS has new ways to file for free. – NJ.com

Tax season is officially open.

Monday, January 27th is the first day you can submit a return. They may not be scheduled until April 15th, but getting Head Start will speed up your refund. Or, if you owe cash to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), save more time.

The agency said above 140 million individual tax returns will be submitted for tax 2024 Before the deadline.

There are several ways File your federal return for free.

IRS Free File

IRS opened it free file service Earlier this month, we enabled eligible taxpayers to begin the process of filing their federal return for free. Completed returns were held until Date of January 27th.

To use the free file, taxpayers must have adjusted gross income (AGI) of $84,000 or less in 2024.

However, the IRS warns that you will not receive free services if you go directly to the company's website. Instead, use the link Irs.gov.

IRS Direct File

Next, the tool details what tax returns it supports.

For example, if you earned all your in-state income in 2024 and lived in New Jersey all year, if you want to use the same filing status, direct filing may be a good choice. “Jointly Married Filing” or “Single” for both federal and state tax returns.

However, if you don't plan on taking the standard deduction and want to itemize instead, you can't use direct filing.

Also, if you have unreported cash income, such as tips or alimony, or other types of income reported on other tax forms, you can't use Direct File. gig work. The program supports W-2 income, unemployment and Social Security income, distributions from health savings accounts, and interest income.

However, there are income limits. If you have wages of $200,000 or more (or $168,600 or more if you have multiple employers), are married and file a joint tax return and together have wages of more than $250,000, or are you married? but file separately for wages over $125,000.

Direct filing can only support tax returns that report certain types of retirement contributions, including 401(k)s, pensions, annuities, 403(b) plans or 457(b) plans. Most taxpayers who take distributions from these types of plans can also use the program.

Although currently unable to support contributions or distributions to IRAs, it is anticipated that direct filing will be able to support distributions from most retirement plans that give Form 1099-R in March 2025.

Free file fillable forms

If you can't use the free file, the IRS says you can still use it Free File Fillable Forms (FFFF) Starting Jan. 27, the IRS said.

“These electronic versions of IRS paper forms are ideal for individuals who are accustomed to using IRS instructions and publications to prepare their taxes,” the agency said.

More free help
