Teachers during Georgia school shooting identified police with panic button technology

A gunman opened fire at Apalachee High School. Barrow County, GeorgiaThe explosion occurred on Wednesday morning, killing four people, including two students and two teachers.

Authorities first learned of the incident when Apalachee High School faculty and staff deployed Centegix CrisisAlert ID technology, which features an unobtrusive panic button that allows students to call authorities by pressing their badge.

“All of our teachers carry identification cards, called Centegix,” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told reporters during a press conference Wednesday night.

“Centegix warned us, Law enforcement After the ID button is pressed, it alerts you that there is an active situation at school for some reason.”

Centegix, a cloud-based wearable safety technology company, enables rapid emergency notification and response by local law enforcement.

The safety solutions company was “founded on the idea that technology can create safer and more secure environments. Our safety solutions feature market-defining technologies that deliver the functionality, connectivity and accessibility needed to withstand real-world emergency situations,” the brand's website states.

“The policies at this school and the systems that were put into place today prevented a much larger tragedy from occurring here today,” Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said at a press conference Wednesday night.

Alert systems provided to educators and other school personnel can not only discreetly communicate emergency situations to police, but also let police know the exact location of the threat and update floor plans as needed.

The campus-wide safety platform also provides school officials and law enforcement with the option to quickly identify building visitors and safety assets such as AEDs, first aid kits and fire alarms.

Additionally, audiovisual materials will be distributed to warn bystanders about emergency situations.

Reuniting students and staff after evacuations and verifying parent identity during emergency pickups are also software implementations provided by Centegix.

Within minutes, The police arrived Hosey said two school resource officers assigned to the school were on scene at the Apalachee High School shooting.

Authorities identified the four victims Wednesday as Mason Schermerhorn, 14, Christian Angulo, 14, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Armey.

The shooter, Colt GrayThe 14-year-old has been taken into custody and charged with murder and will be prosecuted as an adult, Hosey said.

Hosey said once police encountered the suspect, he quickly surrendered himself.
