A young girl, found barefoot on a busy road by her mother, was reunited with her family on Monday.
Jabrill Walls was driving to his grandmother’s house in Memphis, Tennessee, after dropping his children off at school when he noticed a 3-year-old girl standing in the middle of a four-way intersection.
Traffic was quickly halted, allowing the toddler to be guided safely to the sidewalk.
“I opened the car door, reached out my arm, and she ran over, saying she wanted her mom and dad,” Walls said.
Walls then spent the morning attempting to locate the girl’s home, relying on her vague descriptions. When they couldn’t find a match, they decided to take her to the local fire station and contacted the police.
During their time together, Walls recorded several videos, including one where the toddler snuggles on his lap, appearing cozy and secure.
By day’s end, the girl was back with her parents. Although Walls was celebrated as a hero, he chose to downplay the accolades.
The girl’s mother later honored Walls by making her an honorary godmother.
“I just thank God I was there at the right moment. It could have been dangerous—could have been an attack or even an accident. I’m just grateful I could provide a sense of safety for her,” she reportedly said.
When the video of Walls’ adventure gained popularity online, some critics pointed fingers at the toddler’s parents, suggesting negligence. Still, Walls defended the family, emphasizing that the child was loved and encouraged people to reflect before jumping to conclusions.
“It takes a village, and that’s why I could provide them with love and guidance,” he stated.
“You never know what a parent may be facing or what they might need, but I’ve always believed in community support. I can’t do it alone. My children have their own village,” he added.
On Wednesday, Walls had a playdate with the girl, further solidifying their bond as she was informally referred to as her godmother.
“It brings me joy to know my baby has someone who cares for her as much as I do,” the toddler’s mother shared on Facebook.
