San Diego Drug Trafficker Arrested
On Monday, authorities in San Diego arrested a suspected drug trafficker believed to be moving dangerous shipments through an elaborate network of hidden tunnels.
Things escalated a few years back when police stumbled upon a shocking stash connected to 54-year-old Genaro López.
In a significant bust in 2021, police confiscated 241 kilograms of cocaine, eight firearms (two of which were untraceable), ammunition, high-capacity magazines, and $40,000 in cash from a drug house in Chula Vista. Four of López’s associates were detained in that operation, later facing charges and serving sentences. López, however, wasn’t arrested until March of this year, as he wasn’t at the scene during the bust.
About a year later, in 2022, authorities detected a cross-border tunnel after stopping several vehicles leaving another stash in National City.
This operation was much larger. Police seized nearly 800 kilograms of cocaine, along with 74.8 kilograms of methamphetamine and 1.6 kilograms of dangerous fentanyl. The tunnel linked Otay Mesa to Tijuana and was quite elaborate.
Images revealed a dark, steel-reinforced tunnel, roughly 1,744 feet long, 61 feet deep, and 4 feet wide. It featured sophisticated systems like ventilation, electrical setups, and even a railway.
Six individuals were arrested at this location; while five have already pleaded guilty and been sentenced, one managed to escape and is still at large.
This tunnel was similar to another underground drug route that connected Tijuana to a disguised entrance at a Buy 4 Less store in Otay Mesa.
Officials described the tunnel as a “sophisticated cross-border tunnel,” measuring approximately 1,933 feet in length, 55 feet deep, and 4.5 feet high, with reinforced walls.
Investigators had monitored the store for several months and noted unusual activity and a distinct lack of customer traffic.
López is set to appear in court on Tuesday to face charges of conspiracy related to distributing and importing controlled substances. A hearing will determine when his trial will start.
If found guilty, it’s likely that López could face life imprisonment.
