Texas: CBP progresses with Big Bend Border contracts and reroutes 30-ft. wall around National Park

Smart Wall Installation Begins at Texas-Mexico Border

Construction is expected to kick off this month for segments of the federal government’s “Smart Wall” along the Texas-Mexico border, particularly in the Big Bend Sector.

This ambitious project, labeled as a “Smart Wall” by the Trump administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is a multi-billion dollar effort that combines physical barriers with cutting-edge digital surveillance, artificial intelligence (AI), and automated data networks.

In recent weeks, flatbed trucks have been seen transporting construction materials near Big Bend National Park, as reported by the Washington Examiner. CBP confirmed that the installation of panels and initial infrastructure work is set to begin this month, initially focusing on the Marfa and Van Horn areas.

A CBP spokesperson noted, “A Smart Wall with 30-foot-high barriers, advanced detection technology, cameras, and new and improved roads are planned for the Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Marfa, and Van Horn Station Areas.” They added, “Border Wall panel installation is anticipated to begin in July in the Marfa and Van Horn Areas. In other sections of the Big Bend Sector, CBP is implementing a border security strategy that leverages advanced technology and the natural terrain barriers.”

The wall construction and security measures have encountered local resistance, according to the Examiner. One landowner expressed concern over receiving plans that indicated a wall would be built through his property, blocking access to the river.

During the 2023 fiscal year, the sector reported nearly 12,000 apprehensions for illegal border crossings, making it a significant area along the southwest border. However, figures for the 2025 fiscal year showed a dramatic drop to just 3,096 apprehensions.

CBP describes the “Smart Wall” as composed of a steel bollard wall or waterborne barrier, complemented by roads, detection technology, cameras, and lighting. In some areas, there may even be a secondary wall to create a more secure enforcement zone.

According to CBP’s website, “The Smart Wall provides the Border Patrol with both the impedance and denial, domain awareness, and the access and mobility required to secure the border.”

In a June announcement, CBP stated plans to create and maintain a vehicle barrier system and roads in Brewster County, the largest county in Texas, which includes parts of Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. The “Smart Wall Map” indicates that security within these parks will utilize technology and patrol roads without a physical wall, alongside vehicle barriers in specific locations.
