Texas Governor Calls on Congress to Reimburse State for Border Security Costs

Texas Governor Greg Abbott called on Congress to reimburse the state for more than $11.1 billion spent on border security. The governor said the cost of border security was borne by Texas taxpayers “because the Biden administration has refused to meet its obligations for the past four years.”

“President Biden's policies will protect Texas and the rest of the United States from violent criminals, known terrorists, and other hostile groups like the dangerous Venezuelan gang Torren de Aragua,” Abbott's letter said. It has become vulnerable to an unprecedented incursion by foreign powers.” “I launched Operation Lone Star (OLS) to combat these threats to all Americans. Over the past four years, OLS efforts have led to an 87% reduction in illegal immigration to Texas. It was a success, demonstrating the continued effectiveness of President Donald Trump's border measures and shining a spotlight on a national crisis.”

“Texas has spent more than $11.1 billion to protect our nation and secure our borders,” the governor continued. “Therefore, I am formally asking the federal government to fully reimburse the State of Texas for these costs.”

Abbott sent letter To the U.S. Congressional Leadership and the entire Texas Congressional Delegation. The letter was submitted after a meeting between Governor Abbott and U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson about a week ago. During the meeting, the governors discussed the continuing Biden border crisis and the state's efforts to repair the damage caused by the Biden administration.

“Despite the federal government's duty to protect our nation's borders, former President Joe Biden refused to enforce federal immigration laws from day one and pursued reckless open border policies that led to record numbers of illegal immigrants. ” the Texas governor wrote. “President Biden's policies will protect Texas and the rest of the United States from unprecedented threats from violent criminals, known terrorists, and other hostile foreigners like the dangerous Venezuelan gangster Torren de Aragua. We are now vulnerable to any intrusion.”

Because of the historic costs Texas has spent on border security, Governor Abbott called on Congress to “reimburse Texas in full for these costs.”

“The work Texas has done through Operation Lone Star has protected and will continue to benefit the entire nation,” the governor concluded.
