Double Trouble!
A Texas husband was charged with bigamy after his third wife found out through social media posts that he was planning to remarry another woman, but the couple has not divorced.
Marcus Shorten, who has already been divorced twice in his life, married a woman named Tammy in 2012 but decided to separate after seven years of being together. According to KTRK.
The couple still talk on occasion and have even discussed going ahead with the legal process of divorce.
“I don’t want a divorce. Tammy, I’m asking for help. I don’t want a divorce and I don’t want my family to think of me as a failure,” Tammy alleged her 53-year-old husband said.
Tammy was shocked to receive a wedding gift in December last year to mark Shorten’s marriage to his new woman.
This shocking discovery forced Tammy to confront her husband about their surprising marriage.
“I told him, ‘Make sure your business is right before you tell the whole world what you’re doing,'” Tammy told the outlet.
According to Houston marriage records viewed by The Post, Shorten appears not to have followed Tammy’s advice and instead married his new wife on Jan. 27, 2024, at the Fifth Ward Church of Christ.
The man, who has been married four times, has celebrated the big day in 1991, 2000, 2012 and 2024.
The angry wife, knowing that being married to two women is a crime in America, reported her husband to the police.
“I knew it was wrong. Not only did you destroy my life, but you now destroyed someone else’s life and the lives of everyone involved,” Tammy explained.
“You can’t lie and mislead people for your own self-satisfaction,” she added.
Tammy felt betrayed and accused her husband of not knowing what divorce is like despite having “been married so many times before.”
According to court records seen by The Washington Post, Shorten has not yet been arrested despite being charged with bigamy.
Shorten denied to KTRK that he was married to anyone and maintained he was unaware of the rare felony charge.
If convicted of bigamy, the offense carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
