It’s always a bit reassuring to see that unpredictability can still creep into college football, regardless of how polished and professional the sport aims to be. In a surprising twist during the Monday night matchup between SMU and FSU, a power outage in Tallahassee led to the game unfolding under near darkness and without any technological assistance.

There’s been quite a bit of speculation regarding the cause of the outage, although officials have firmly dismissed claims that it was triggered by a traffic incident near the stadium. What we do know is that after some delay, the decision was made to continue the game without any technology. This meant no headsets for communication, no announcements over the public address system, no scoreboard updates, and just dim lighting overall. The broadcast team was left in disbelief.

The officials believed there was enough light to keep the game going, which is understandable to a point, yet it’s easy to see why fans were frustrated. This wasn’t just some random Division III game or a lower-tier match. SMU, ranked No. 19, was effectively jeopardizing their entire season by competing against FSU.
