Trump’s Stance on Hostages and Gaza Conflict

On Monday, President Donald Trump emphasized that the only effective way to secure the release of remaining Israeli hostages is to “confront and destroy” Hamas entirely. His comments seem to align with Prime Minister Netanyahu’s plans for a military invasion of Gaza City, designed to increase pressure on the group.

“We will only see the return of the remaining hostages when Hamas is confronted and destroyed!!! The sooner this takes place, the better the chances of success will be. Remember, I was the one who negotiated and got hundreds of hostages freed and released into Israel (and America!),” Trump stated.

He went on to boast about his track record, mentioning that he ended six wars within six months and “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities. “Play to WIN, or don’t play at all!” he added, directing his attention to the issue.

Meanwhile, about 300,000 people took to the streets in Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square on Sunday, urging the government to secure a deal for the release of hostages. In total, over 2.5 million Israelis reportedly participated in various protests across the country, according to Haaretz.

Several recently released hostages, including Ilana Gritzewsky and Yarden Bibas, were present at the demonstration. “This day of strike is important, but it cannot be just one day,” said Yehoud, one of the former hostages. “We have to disrupt again and again until those in captivity come back.”

Reacting to the protests, Prime Minister Netanyahu argued that such demonstrations could lead to increased danger, suggesting that they might provoke another terror attack like the one that occurred on October 7th.

“Those who call today for an end to Hamas’s war not only harden the terrorist group’s position and delay the release of our hostages, but also guarantee that the horrors of October 7 will be repeated,” Netanyahu stated.

Einav Zangauker, the mother of a hostage named Matan, expressed her frustration with Netanyahu’s comments, saying they only show how threatened he feels by the protests.

A report from Reuters revealed that a Hamas official has confirmed the group’s acceptance of a new ceasefire proposal in Gaza but did not specifically mention hostages. This report is somewhat ambiguous, as some others suggest that hostages may be included in the plan.

The Jerusalem Post noted that this deal includes a 60-day ceasefire, allowing for increased humanitarian aid into Gaza in exchange for releasing 10 living hostages and 18 deceased ones. Ongoing negotiations for a permanent end to the war would also take place while the ceasefire is active.

In a quick response, the Prime Minister’s Office stated that Israel would only consider any agreements contingent upon the simultaneous release of all hostages.

“The Prime Minister’s Office clarifies that Israel will agree to a deal on condition that all the hostages are released in one go, and in accordance with our conditions for ending the war, which include the disarming of Hamas and the establishment of governance that will live peacefully with Israel,” the office stated.
