White House Calls for National Guard to Address San Francisco Issues

The White House has urged California Democrats to consider the deployment of the National Guard to assist in “cleaning up” San Francisco. However, Governor Gavin Newsom responded that such a move would “ruin one of America’s greatest cities.”

During an interview with Maria Bartiromo of Fox News, President Donald Trump announced plans to send the National Guard to San Francisco next. White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson emphasized that local Democrats should “welcome the president to help clean up our city.” She criticized existing Democratic policies, suggesting they prioritize criminals over law-abiding citizens, which she claims has led to chaos in major cities across America.

Newsom, who was elected in November with a focus on public safety, argued differently. He accentuated his administration’s efforts to enhance safety and the tangible progress made since January.

In light of Trump’s remarks about San Francisco’s challenges, he pointed to successful examples in other cities like Memphis, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. There, the Democratic mayor credited the Trump administration for improvements in public safety. “We’re going to San Francisco,” Trump said, reminiscing about its former grandeur, which he believes has deteriorated in recent years.

In a stark rebuttal, Newsom took to social media, stating, “Fact check: No one wants you here. You’re going to ruin one of America’s greatest cities.”

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie mentioned that over 45,000 attendees participated in the recent Salesforce Dreamforce conference without any major incidents, showcasing improvements in public safety.

He praised the collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, saying that their combined efforts are yielding positive results for the city. This past August, Newsom had criticized Trump for “militarizing American cities” amid various deployments of the National Guard in cities across the U.S.

As a countermeasure, Newsom has mobilized California Highway Patrol Crime Suppression Teams to maintain safety and combat crime throughout the state. His comments suggest a push to reinforce partnerships with state and federal agencies without relying on federal troops.

In various social media statements, both Newsom and Lurie have reiterated their positions, aiming to bolster confidence in their ability to manage public safety independently of federal intervention.
