There Is ‘Risk’ Trump Case Creates Precedent for Using Courts to Attack Opponents

“There’s always that risk,” Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) said on “CNN Newsroom” on Friday, in response to a question about whether the trial and conviction of former President and 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump would set a precedent for members of each party to use the judicial system to go after political opponents in court. “But the other way around is probably worse.”

host Jim Sciutto asked.[A]Are you concerned about the legal precedent here? I’m not asking you to judge the decision of 12 jurors. They listened to the evidence, did their job, sent questions to the judge, and returned a guilty verdict. That’s how the system works. But are you concerned that this will provide a platform for politicians of each party to at least try to go after their political opponents through the courts?”

Quigley responded: “There’s always that risk. But the other way around is probably worse. If you take the opposite argument to its logical extreme, you could never indict a president or a former president, regardless of what crimes they may have committed. And here we have a jury of his peers who unanimously and in a fairly short period of time found the president guilty.”
