Retirement Cities to Consider in 2026

This year, if you’re pondering a move to enhance your retirement savings, a recent analysis from GOBankingRates presents five cities worth considering.

The amount one needs to save for retirement can differ significantly based on the region. For instance, while Oklahoma may require around $735,284, the figure jumps to approximately $1,110,019 in Arizona.

GOBankingRates highlights five communities ideal for retirees in 2026, emphasizing factors like cost of living, housing prices, quality of life, and amenities for seniors.

1. Midland, Michigan

Midland has a median home price of roughly $206,000, which is quite a bit lower than the national average of about $360,000. This discrepancy makes it an attractive option for retirees looking to save on housing expenses. The low cost of living is a major draw.

Situated inland from Saginaw Bay, Midland is inhabited by nearly 43,000 residents and offers a walkable community rich in nature, along with distinct seasonal changes. Many appreciate the chance to engage in winter activities. Not surprisingly, U.S. News & World Report ranks Midland high among communities suited for retirement.

2. Homosassa Springs, Florida

The charming community of Homosassa Springs attracts many retirees due to its affordability and location on Florida’s west coast, just north of Tampa.

With an average home price around $220,000, it also boasts a warm climate and convenient access to the coast. Plus, there’s no state income tax to contend with.

3. The Woodlands, Texas

The Woodlands, found north of Houston, is near advanced medical facilities, offers varied housing options, and benefits from a favorable tax environment—there’s no state income tax here either.

However, it’s worth noting that the cost of living is somewhat elevated compared to smaller towns; the median home price is about $474,000, which exceeds the national average.

4. Rio Rancho, New Mexico

Known for its dry, sunny weather, Rio Rancho is particularly appealing to retirees who enjoy outdoor activities. As a suburb of Albuquerque, it’s not only close to essential medical services but is also relatively affordable, with a median home price of $310,000.

5. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville, set in the western mountains, has a population of about 95,000 and provides access to outdoor pursuits, medical care, and the conveniences found in a modest metropolitan area.

The median home price here is about $442,000, which remains fairly reasonable compared to other locations on this list, although still higher than some might prefer.
