Three children and one adult die in Oregon elementary school shooting; suspect is deceased

Tragic Shooting at Oregon Elementary School

On Thursday, a shooting at an elementary school in Oregon resulted in the tragic deaths of three children and one adult, while the suspected shooter is also deceased, likely due to a bystander’s intervention.

Federal law enforcement sources have verified the deaths of the four individuals, and the police in Bend are looking into the possibility that a bystander shot the assailant inside Silver Rail Elementary School.

Police were methodically searching through the school to evacuate students and staff as they worked to piece together the events of the incident.

Sheila Miller, communications manager for the Bend Police Department, stated during a briefing, “We don’t have confirmation yet who shot the suspect. It may have been a bystander.”

Bend Fire medics transported at least two individuals to St. Charles Hospital, but their conditions have not yet been disclosed.

The elementary school has an enrollment of around 400 to 450 students, along with more than 40 staff members. It’s unclear how many were present on the campus at the time of the shooting.

Miller visibly emotional, remarked on the impact this event has had on the community, saying, “This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It’s devastating.”

First responders received a call at approximately 12:59 p.m., reporting a shot fired into a vehicle. Police arrived on the scene within minutes, just after an alert was dispatched at 1 p.m.

Shortly thereafter, it was reported that the suspect was down, as multiple 911 calls alerted authorities to the scenario unfolding at the school.

Hundreds of law enforcement personnel from various agencies across Central Oregon responded to the scene, with the FBI’s local office offering assistance to local authorities.

Families were directed to a nearby church for reunification, while officials urged the public to avoid the school area.

Silver Rail Elementary serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade as part of the Bend-La Pine School District. The district’s superintendent, Steven Cook, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence.”

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek mentioned she is closely watching the situation and expressed gratitude to first responders on the scene. Meanwhile, Senator Jeff Merkley shared his thoughts on social media, acknowledging the fear and sadness that has engulfed the community, stating, “No one should have to fear violence at school.”

Representative Janelle Bynum characterized the shooting as “every parent’s worst fear,” adding that children should be safe in their schools, not in fear of gunfire.

This situation is ongoing, and further updates are expected.
