Tragic Accident in Zeeland Claims Lives of Three Children and an Adult
On Thursday, a devastating incident occurred in the small Dutch town of Vogelwaarde, where a car, allegedly driven by a 19-year-old man, left the road and crashed into a group of cyclists near an elementary school.
Around 12:30 PM local time, it’s reported that the vehicle veered off the county road connecting Vogelwaarde and Terhore. The victims were part of a larger group, consisting of 14 children and two adult supervisors from De Walland Primary School in Axel, who were heading to a school camp along a designated cycling route.
At the scene, two children and an adult staff member lost their lives. A third child was airlifted to a Rotterdam hospital but sadly passed away shortly after arrival. Reports indicate that three other children remain in critical condition, battling for their lives in nearby hospitals.
The police have not disclosed the names of the victims. The driver, a man from the nearby city of Hulst, is currently in custody. A police representative noted that the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated, and they were cautious about providing further details to the press.
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten expressed his sorrow over the tragic event through a social media post, describing the news from Zeeland as both terrifying and shocking. “What was meant to be a joyful school camp has turned into a nightmare,” he remarked. He offered his thoughts to the victims and their families, wishing them strength during this difficult time.
Judith Thielen, the Dutch Secretary of State for Education and Liberation, echoed similar sentiments, stressing the heartbreak of what should have been a memorable school experience. She emphasized the need for support among families, friends, and staff affected by this tragedy.
Fran Verwind, the acting mayor of Terneuzen, has plans to visit the school on Friday to address the profound sadness caused by the incident, stating there would be discussions on how to offer support to the community. School Board member Sjoerd Sanders described the day as dark and noted the lasting impact this event would have on the children involved, highlighting the importance of looking out for each other in the aftermath.
