Tiffany Slaton survives being lost in the Sierra Nevada for three weeks because of an unlocked cabin.

A well-thought-out plan truly paid off.

Tiffany Slaton, a 27-year-old hiker from Georgia, was reported missing for three weeks in California’s mountains. Remarkably, she found refuge in an unlocked cabin at a deserted resort—an unusual twist of fate, thanks to the owner’s foresight.

Slaton was first reported missing on April 29, after her family hadn’t heard from her. A significant search effort covered over 600 square miles in the Sierra National Forest. But it was Christopher Gutierrez, the owner of Vermillion Valley Resort, who stumbled upon her this week.

On the day he arrived to prepare the resort for reopening, he noticed the cabin door ajar and saw some shoes nearby.

“She jumped out, didn’t say a word, just ran straight to me and wanted a hug,” Gutierrez recounted during a press conference. “It was a surreal moment when it dawned on me who I was looking at.”

Gutierrez explained that he typically leaves cabin doors open during off-seasons, just in case someone might need shelter from extreme weather conditions, like snowstorms. “This situation is primarily for people’s safety. If they need to escape severe weather, the cabins should be available,” he noted.

Slaton, originally from Jeffersonville, Georgia, told Gutierrez that she survived on green onions for several weeks before he offered her some peanuts and jelly sandwiches.

“She endured a snowstorm and found the cabin. She held up there overnight… This girl was saved for a reason,” Gutierrez emphasized.

Once rescued, Slaton was taken to the hospital, where she is reportedly recovering well, despite experiencing dehydration.

Her parents, Bobby and Fredrina, reported her missing after she was last seen on April 24. Just two days before her rescue, the sheriff’s office had announced a reduction in search efforts.

The emotional moment came when Bobby received a call from Tiffany, confirming she was alive. “Dad, I’m alive, and I’m sorry, but I wanted to let you know,” he recalled tearfully at a press event.

Amidst the overwhelming relief, Fredrina sought comfort in a nearby person as her joy turned to tears. “I just needed someone to hold me,” she shared.

Details about Slaton’s incredible survival journey remain unclear, including how she ended up at the Vermillion Valley Resort. The sheriff’s office plans to interview her for more information.

“Three weeks—it’s unprecedented,” remarked Tony Botty, a spokesperson for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office. “It speaks volumes about Tiffany’s strength and fighting spirit.”

Surprisingly, Slaton was rescued just a day before her 28th birthday.
