Tennessee Sen. Jack Johnson (R) said the bill, which reached the Supreme Court in a lawsuit over a Tennessee law banning puberty blockers for minors, originally focused on transgender surgeries for children. The incident was sparked by a report about the clinic.
“Well, Mike, thanks to great reporting by the Daily Wire and Matt Walsh and his team, we were very disappointed to learn that in late 2022, they are, in fact, here in Middle Tennessee. There's this famous medical facility, and it's actually where children are treated. There are clinics that specialize in gender pediatric surgery, which is why they are pediatrics, and certainly prescribe very, very harmful drugs that can retard a child's physical development. “Long-term medical complications,'' Johnson began in an interview Friday. Breitbart News Daily.
“Obviously, Tennesseans from one end of the state to the other were disappointed. So he and I, the House majority leader, and I am the Senate majority leader, have come together to say, We said we have to stop this. We started working with the attorney general and created a bill,” he said, adding that other states have tried to do the same but have not withstood judicial scrutiny. He said he was aware of that.
Johnson said it would ban transgender surgeries on minors, as well as the use of cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers to help children transition to the opposite sex.
“This bill prohibits health care providers from performing gender reassignment or genital modification surgery on minors to treat gender dysphoria or gender dysphoria, and also prohibits the use of cross-sex hormones. “I'm there” [and] Puberty blockers for such purposes. While it is clear that these drugs are often used for other medical problems that occur in children, their ban on these drugs for the purpose of treating gender dysphoria was because they were “very fundamentally… Because we believe these drugs: Surgery and the use of these drugs are harmful, and these treatments have not existed for a long time, so the science is unsettled and undecided at best. ”

Johnson also said it's telling that the ban on transgender surgeries for minors hasn't even been challenged before the Supreme Court. Rather, it is simply a matter of drug use.
“Mike, what we're saying is that through the Tenth Amendment and federalism and state sovereignty, states should have the right to regulate this type of medical practice. And that's something we already have. It’s not inconsistent with what we’re doing in different ways,” he added.
Ultimately, Johnson said, Tennessee stands as a “touchstone for affirming the right of states to protect their children as they see fit.”
