Support for Dismissed Vandalism Case Surrounding Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche expressed his support on Sunday for U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, who has decided to drop a vandalism case linked to the recently renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

On July 31, federal prosecutors sought to dismiss charges against Olympic canoeist David Hahn, who faced accusations of causing damage to a $14 million project after signs of cracks, algae, and peeling sealant emerged. The prosecutors pointed out that the damage might have resulted from poor renovations rather than actual vandalism.

Blanche, while backing Pirro, noted that he couldn’t entirely fault President Donald Trump for his feelings regarding the case’s dismissal, especially since there could still be “potential sabotage” involved.

“I fully support U.S. Attorney Pirro, just as President Trump does,” he stated during an NBC interview.

Blanche clarified that although eyewitnesses allegedly saw Hahn damaging the pool, the court documents did not confirm that all the harm stemmed from negligent restoration work. He admitted that eyewitness accounts alone wouldn’t suffice to make a solid case.

“We have a witness who claims, ‘I saw the defendant destroy the reflecting pool.’ However, the connection to actual evidence is crucial,” he explained.

David Hahn has entered a plea of not guilty.

Despite some inconsistencies in the evidence regarding the case, Blanche commended Pirro for her efforts in prosecuting vandalism against monuments. His remarks followed a recent incident where her office pursued charges against a woman, Melissa L. Farris, for allegedly spray-painting a war memorial and disrupting its fountain with foam soap.

“U.S. Attorney Pirro has done a tremendous job tackling these cases. It’s unfair to judge her based on just one particular case,” he remarked.

Blanche also indicated that he would take into consideration the White House’s recent request for the Justice Department to explore filing new misdemeanor charges against Hahn after original charges were dropped.

Blanche emphasized the importance of considering the president’s perspective on these matters, stating, “Of course we take into account the views of the president. That’s certainly what I listen to.”

The White House has not provided any comments regarding the situation.
