An influential celebrity donor scolded Democrats for panicking in the aftermath of their 2024 election defeat, saying now is the time for internal reflection and change.
“People need a reality check. Democrats need a reality check,” activist and producer Nicole Abban said in a new interview.
“I don't really follow Bernie Sanders, but I love what he says: 'The Democratic Party is breaking away from the working class, and then the working class decides to vote for someone else. Avant, the daughter of the late philanthropist Jacqueline Avant and prominent music executive Clarence Avant, is married to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos and is a top Democratic donor.
The couple are friends of the Obamas, and raised more than $500,000 for the president's campaign in 2012 after she served as ambassador to the Bahamas. Avant also helped raise money for the campaigns of several prominent Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden, and California Governor Gavin Newsom, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Avant said while he sympathized with those disappointed by Harris' loss, he remained hopeful for the future of the Democratic Party.
She gave tough love to liberals who were fleeing the country because of the new Republican administration.

“Everyone would say, 'Oh my God. Where are you going to move?' I'm not going anywhere, I'm an American, I love my country,” Avant said. “But at the end of the day, millions of Democrats didn't vote.”
“I'm still very optimistic. I think we have great people in our party like Gov. Josh Shapiro, Gov. Andy Beshear, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. They're all smart and capable. People are going to make their own decisions. You have to decide how you want to be effective, productive and orderly,” she said.
“Don't just complain all the time.”
In addition to his work in the entertainment industry and as a Democratic ally, Avant also served as Obama's ambassador to the Bahamas from 2009 to 2011.
