A report released Thursday found that nearly three-quarters of faculty at four-year colleges believe academic freedom is unsafe.
Teachers are increasingly fearful of being negatively affected by the opinions they express in and out of the classroom, and are therefore choosing to self-censor. According to To a report from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). Issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), gender ideology, and the Palestinian conflict are the driving forces behind the politically charged situation on campus.
“Universities have been exchanging ideologies and ideas,” a University of Michigan professor said, according to FIRE. “I have never felt comfortable talking about issues related to DEI and transgender issues, and the university I work for has adopted the position that both of these issues cannot be questioned.[ed] without fear of reprisal, sanctions, or expulsion from the academy. ”
Of the 6,269 faculty members surveyed, the majority believe academic institutions should remain neutral on political issues and should not take official positions, the report shows.

At least 23% of faculty say their departments are “somewhat” or “very” hostile toward people with political beliefs, according to the report. Conservatives were three times more likely than liberals to report hiding their political beliefs from other teachers for fear of retaliation.
The Indiana University Bloomington professor said, “I'm kind of in the middle of the road, and even though there are viewpoints from both sides, I feel like if I don't keep my mouth shut, I'll be ostracized or fired.'' ” he told FIRE.
According to one survey, university faculty tend to lean to the left of the political spectrum, with nearly 80% vowing to vote for former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in November's election. “The McCarthy era is considered the lowest point in the history of academic freedom in America, with its witch hunts.”, Loyalty tests and blacklisting of colleges across the country,” Nathan Honeycutt, FIRE's manager of polling and analysis, said in a statement. “The fact that academics today feel less free to express their ideas than they did in the 1950s is a devastating indictment of the current state of academic freedom and speech,” he added.
The survey was conducted from March 4 to May 13, 2024, using a sample of tenure-track, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track faculty at 55 four-year universities nationwide.
