Several major television networks are choosing to boycott the White House press pool following a decision by President Donald Trump to ban certain outlets from the White House grounds.
On Friday, Trump prohibited CNN, Politico, and MSNow from accessing the White House, claiming their coverage included “FICTION and LIES” about his administration. As a result of the ban, Fox News, ABC, CBS, and NBC have collectively decided to withdraw from their participation in the press pool.
The press pool consists of a small group of rotating reporters responsible for covering the president’s events and comments daily. Those in the pool relay the president’s remarks and responses to other reporters not present. Networks in the pool also share their coverage with those unable to attend.
CNN, Politico, and MSNow have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration seeking access to the White House.
Trump, in announcing the original ban on Truth Social, expressed that “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America.”
During Biden’s presidency, conservative reporters faced challenges, such as being isolated and restricted from accessing the president. In one instance, outlets like the Daily Caller, New York Post, and Fox News Radio were removed from a Biden event that was deemed open to select media only. Steven Nelson from the New York Post resisted leaving, arguing there was sufficient room for all journalists.
The Biden administration also introduced new guidelines determining which journalists could attend briefing sessions and presidential events. Reporters who interrupted and were perceived as “unprofessional” often faced criticism from their peers during the Biden years.
When 442 reporters had their press credentials revoked under the Biden administration, the White House Correspondents Association reportedly took a “noncommittal stance,” according to the Washington Post.
Jacqui Heinrich, the current WHCA President, emphasized that this situation goes beyond just the rights of journalists, stating it also impacts the American people’s right to receive a comprehensive and independent account of the actions, policies, and decisions from the country’s highest office. She reiterated the WHCA’s support for CNN, MSNOW, and Politico, who are facing exclusion for simply fulfilling their journalistic responsibilities.
