Travelers Championship: Fans provide sensational trolling after protest invasion on the 18th

The Travelers Championship once again ended in a playoff, but before Scottie Scheffler could claim his sixth PGA Tour victory, chaos erupted on the 18th green.

A group of Extinction Rebellion protesters blocked Scheffler, Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia’s group, charging onto the course and scattering colored smoke and a powdery substance.

Police caught up with them and quickly detained the group, but they were able to cause some damage on the 18th green. However, the protesters did not stop even after being handcuffed. Challenging cop I was totally off course.

While the agronomy team was clearing the 18th green, fans chanted USA-USA-USA, sang the Star-Spangled Banner, and yelled abuse at the disruptive players, which prompted the agronomy team and officials to relocate the playoff holes.

While things settled down and crews made changes, golf fans on social media picked up on the incident and were quick to make jokes about the situation and even mock Scheffler.

Check out some of the top reactions to the protests at the Travelers Championship.

The Schaeffler tracking device reported the entire incident live.

No Laying Up joked about Kim’s slow play and blamed the protests on him: Kim seemed to be playing slower as the round went on and it was brutal to watch him stare down the ball.

Another funny tweet was directed at Canadian golfer Adam Hadwin, who won last year’s RBC Canadian Open with Nick Taylor. Hadwin tried to celebrate by running onto the green, but was tackled by a police officer instead.

The reaction to this protest wouldn’t have been the same without Kyle Porter’s “normal sports” joke. Golf has had plenty of moments that have fans scratching their heads, and this protest was one of them.

Thankfully, no spectators appear to have been injured, and although the golf course took a major beating, fans still had their fair share of laughs as the Travelers Championship finished.
