Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that if US leaders advance with 25% tariffs on northern products in the middle of the night, they are ready to launch a trade war with President Trump.
Trudeau called America's impending actions towards Canada “unjust” and vowed not to “unanswered.”
“When US tariffs come into effect tonight, Canada will take effect tomorrow at 12:01am and will respond with a 25% tariff on $15.5 billion in American goods. We will soon start with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods and the remaining $125 billion in 21 days of American goods,” he said in a statement.
“Our tariffs will be in place until US trade measures are withdrawn. If US tariffs do not cease, we are actively and continuing discussions with states and territories to pursue some non-tariff measures.”
Trump said early Monday, White House reporters said the 25% tariff would slap Canadian and Mexican products in the middle of the night after a 30-day suspension of the act.

He argued that tariffs were a way of forcing two countries to fight the flow of fentanyl and the flow to the US, and a way to stop illegal immigration.
Trump, 78, also said he hopes to wipe out the trade imbalance between the US and the two other countries and move more factories to the US.
Trudeau warned that if tariffs are enforced, Americans will need to spit more cash for everyday products.
“Americans pay more for groceries, gas and cars, potentially losing thousands of jobs. Tariffs will disrupt very successful business relationships,” he said.
