Trump Administration Eases Export Restrictions on Anthropic’s AI
The Trump administration has approved the broader availability of Anthropic’s advanced AI systems, specifically the Claude Fabre 5 and Claude Mytos 5 models, which had previously faced limitations due to cybersecurity worries.
This change came after Anthropic committed to enhancing safeguards against misuse and promised to collaborate more closely with the government on future developments, as reported by Politico.
In an internal announcement, Anthropic confirmed, “As of today, June 30th, export restrictions on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 have been lifted.”
Fable 5 serves as a general-purpose AI model with added protections aimed at preventing its potential misuse. On the other hand, Mythos 5 offers a more sophisticated version, optimized for complex tasks with fewer built-in restrictions.
Neither the White House nor Anthropic responded immediately to inquiries.
Earlier this year, President Trump had instructed all federal agencies to cease using Anthropic’s technology following the company’s refusal to provide the U.S. military with extensive access to its AI capabilities. Trump expressed strong disapproval on social media, stating, “America will never allow radical left-wing corporations to determine how our nation’s great military fights and wins wars!”
Sean Parnell, a spokesperson for the Pentagon, mentioned that the relationship between the Army and Anthropic was under review, emphasizing the need for partners willing to support military efforts.
In response to these events, Anthropic was asked by the Department of Defense to limit its reliance on the AI technology, with reports indicating that transitioning to a new system could take over a year.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick remarked on the collaboration with the U.S. government, stating that Anthropic has undertaken significant measures to mitigate the risks linked with its latest AI models.
Furthermore, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced that state agencies would benefit from a new partnership with Anthropic, offering a 50% discount and free training sessions on Claude models, as highlighted in a press release from his office.
