Trump Administration Effectively Influences Sanctuary State to Alter Policy on ICE

Trump Administration Pressures Nevada on Immigration Cooperation

The Trump administration has effectively urged Nevada to enhance collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal immigration bodies.

On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that Nevada law enforcement would partner with ICE to remove individuals unlawfully present in the state, leading to its removal from the administration’s sanctuary jurisdictions list. This move underscores a trend of local governments increasing cooperation with federal immigration authorities amid ongoing pressure from the White House.

Noem commented, “True leaders stand up when others falter. We applaud the efforts of the Nevada Sheriffs Association and Governor Joseph Lombardo to work with ICE in protecting Americans from potentially dangerous illegal immigrants.” She added, “Thanks to their efforts, Nevada is no longer considered a sanctuary jurisdiction, and I urge other leaders nationwide to follow this example, enabling all Americans to live in peace and security.”

A letter from the Nevada Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs, dated August 7, noted that all sheriff’s offices in the state currently engage with ICE. These agencies have established policies detailing their interactions with ICE agents, and information about immigration policies is publicly accessible on their websites.

This initiative was partly a response to legal restrictions imposed by the Department of Justice on the state. In July, Louisville’s mayor announced similar actions, responding to a DOJ complaint regarding non-cooperation with federal laws.

Throughout the Trump administration, there has been significant public pressure to address the so-called sanctuary jurisdictions. Lawsuits have been filed targeting such areas as California, New York City, and Chicago.

While “sanctuary city” lacks a formal definition, it generally refers to governmental entities that limit collaboration with federal immigration authorities. These policies often prevent local law enforcement from complying with ICE requests, sharing information, or alerting deportation officials about the release of wanted individuals.
