Trump administration finds migrant children due to trafficking worries

Efforts to Protect Children from Exploitation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is emphasizing initiatives to assist children who might be vulnerable to exploitation due to their sponsors. This follows a period when many children entered the country illegally and, as a result, have been overlooked.

Recently, the Trump administration noted that around 300,000 children were placed with either inadequate or unknown sponsors during the Biden administration. This raises serious concerns about their safety, as many of these children may have been left unaccompanied and potentially exposed to human traffickers. Alarmingly, reports indicate that 13,000 have already been identified in troubling situations.

Former acting ICE director Jonathan Fahey expressed to Fox News Digital that this situation highlights the harsh realities of prior immigration policies.

Warnings from House Republicans

House Republicans have voiced concerns that the critical rhetoric directed at ICE agents by Democrats is escalating violent incidents against them.

DHS recently revealed it has resolved more than 59,000 reports concerning children—a large portion of the 65,000 backlog—along with numerous leads related to criminal activities. Fahey, who previously served as DHS’s associate deputy secretary, mentioned that there is typically a structured approach to ensuring that immigrant children are placed with the appropriate individuals.

“Typically, when an unaccompanied minor is assigned a sponsor, there should be a review process to verify the sponsor’s identity and ensure appropriate follow-ups,” he explained.

Fahey also highlighted how recent funding initiatives supported by the Trump administration could combat exploitative actions more effectively, specifically by enhancing resources for immigration enforcement.

Resource Expansion for ICE

The current administration has approved a government spending bill that includes funding for an additional 10,000 ICE agents. Alongside this, a recruitment drive has begun, boasting attractive signing bonuses and other incentives.

Fahey noted, “With these resources, we can investigate a broader range of crimes more efficiently than in the past.” He acknowledged that the need for more resources is significant for ICE to effectively track down victims and identify perpetrators, despite their ongoing efforts.

While there’s a necessity to manage border security, Fahey pointed out the importance of finding a balance. “You don’t want to completely close off the border, but you also want to manage it effectively.” He emphasized that addressing internal issues might lead to more effective outcomes.

DHS has reported numerous enforcement actions, including workplace checks and home welfare assessments based on prior intelligence, including criminal warrants.
