Federal Funds for K-12 Released by Trump Administration

The Trump administration has announced the release of approximately $6.8 billion in federal funds that had been previously frozen for K-12 programs, as confirmed by the Department of Education on Friday. This announcement was made during the National Association of Governors (NGA) Summer Conference in Colorado Springs, where Director Linda McMahon was in attendance.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has finalized its reviews of various federal funding titles and has instructed the Department of Education to proceed with the allocation of all formula funds.

Earlier this month, over 20 Democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that the freeze on federal funding by the Department of Education was unconstitutional and detrimental to states just weeks before the start of the new academic year.

A bipartisan group of governors, including Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, expressed their gratitude to McMahon for releasing the funds during discussions at the NGA education sessions on Friday.

Concerns Over Communication

During the conference, Polis raised concerns about the unclear communication process regarding funding, asking McMahon how to prevent such confusion in the future. McMahon acknowledged that while it might not be possible to eliminate all gaps in communication, some issues could be attributed to transitional processes.

She noted that the delay in releasing funds was partly due to the time taken by the OMB to review the titles before approval.

Positive Feedback from Governors

McMahon assured the governors that the processes would improve, emphasizing that they aim to avoid similar situations going forward. Several governors joined in thanking McMahon for her efforts to return federal funds to their states during the discussions.

Polis introduced the NGA’s summer sessions, advocating for a “Let’s get ready! Educate all Americans for success” initiative.

Commitments to Educational Discussions

McMahon expressed her appreciation for the governors’ inquiries and reaffirmed her commitment to traveling to various states to address the distinct educational needs across the country. In a prior interview, she emphasized the importance of collaboration with governors as the administration looks to reshape the Department of Education.

She conveyed that education should transcend political lines and highlighted the necessity of returning control of education back to the states, which has raised concerns among some governors regarding federal involvement.

Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order aimed at dismantling the Department of Education, fulfilling a key promise from his 2024 presidential campaign.
