Trump Calls for Death Penalty for Murdering Firefighters

During a luncheon in the White House Rose Garden, President Donald Trump announced his decision to instruct the Department of Justice to pursue the death penalty in cases where a firefighter is murdered. This marks a notable extension of his prior proposals to enforce capital punishment for those convicted of killing police officers.

While the president asserted a strong federal commitment to addressing violence against first responders, the actual application of this policy may be limited, as federal death penalty laws typically pertain only to certain federal offenses or crimes occurring under federal jurisdiction. Homicide cases at the state level are largely managed according to individual state laws.

“They’re shot at while going up ladders,” Trump stated. “They get shot up in some neighborhoods….”

The gathering included representatives from various organizations, such as the International Association of Fire Fighters and the National Sheriffs’ Association, as noted by FireRescue 1. During the event, Steve Hirsch, chairman of the National Volunteer Fire Council, gave the president a helmet and invoked a blessing for his safety.

Reflecting on the helmet gift, Trump jokingly wished he had received it earlier, reminiscing about a past event in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“I could have used this in Butler. This would have been very helpful. I mean, I wish you gave it to me a little bit earlier,” he joked.

This lighthearted comment referenced a serious moment during a July 2024 campaign rally, where he faced an assassination attempt that resulted in the tragic death of former volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore.
